BIBLE STUDY - LENT: 2008
STATIONS OF THE CROSS

For the Lenten Bible Studies we are following Our Lord's passion and death as recorded by the Evangelists, following the Stations of the Cross used by Pope John Paul II on Good Friday, 1991. They have been used several times since, including by Pope Benedict XVI on Good Friday 2007.

These Stations are not meant as replacements for the traditional Stations which are found on the walls of our Church in Leatherhead and in many other churches. They are an alternative set which concentrates on the Gospel accounts.

Over the centuries, in fact, this devotion has varied and the number of stations has varied from as few as five to as many as thirty! It was not until 1731 that Pope Clement XII fixed the number at fourteen.

In our study sessions we will follow Our Lord's Passion in the words of the Evangelists. For some stations, where the Gospel account is very short, we will read other related passages of scriptures. Our studies are intended to contemplative and to help us in our Lenten preparation for the great feast of Christ's Resurrection.
